If you go in with the expectation that this is an older game than 1, then no, not disappointing. Definitely recommend, even though I still like 2 better. In the end there were some small elements I wish they'd kept around for 2 and in general had a good time and unlocked some stuff in 2. In some ways it feels a lot like finding 3 new story islands, but the builder has a different personality, the story has a different focus, buildings and levels and a few items work differently, there's no Malroth, and the battles are much harder (in a good way). I stopped playing 2 completely so I'd stop confusing it with 1 and once I got used to things it was more fun. I kept expecting things to work the same as 2 and would hit the wrong button when trying to attack or jump off a ledge and get fall damage. I enjoyed myself and thought it was worth it, but it was really hard to get used to. Overall, DQB2 is definitely the better game, it's an improvement in almost every way, but DQB1 is still great, and if you want more of something like DQB2 it's definitely worth it.
The last chapter has a portion that's probably the most difficult thing in either game, but it's still a really cool area. The first chapter has some base defense stuff that is simpler than its equivalent in DQB2, but that I personally liked a bit better, because you're not just following a blueprint and you get to play with it a lot sooner. Similarly to how DQB2 is a sort of sequel to DQ2, DQB1 is a sort of "what if" sequel to DQ1. There's a lot of charming stuff in DQB1, a lot of interesting and inventive areas. It'll be weird but it's not a deal breaker.

I bought it for full price for the Switch and didn't regret it. I'm not familiar enough with how often it does or doesn't go on sale. Keep in mind that it was originally designed as a Vita game rather than a full console game like DQB2, but building elements / story elements are all there. The lack of a persistent hub is the most major difference between the two games.
You can revisit these areas after completing them. This is similar to the "go to a new island without an inventory" system in DQB2, but without the Isle of Awakening as an area that you continually return to and expand as you play the game. DQB1 is split into different chapters that are all self contained.
